Paul J. Hartzheim, P.E.

I was born and raised in Beaver Dam, WI.  After college I spent the next 29+ years working for the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT). I retired from WisDOT in 2011 to pursue new challenges.


I have also been involved in a number of community activities, including 6 years on the Dodge County Board of Supervisors (chaired several committees) and lake property improvement association (board member and president for 5 years).

Experience

Geodetic Directions, LLC is a limited liability company and under the ownership of Paul Hartzheim which provides consulting on geodetic survey programs and related technologies. . Mr. Hartzheim was the DOT Program Manager – Geodesist with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation and was responsible for the following:


  • Development, management, coordination, and maintenance of both the passive network (vertical, horizontal,  and gravitational geodetic control network) and the active network (Wisconsin Continuously Operating Reference Stations – WISCORS) in Wisconsin.
  • Management, coordination, development, administration, and execution of consultant contracts for activities related to the establishment of the passive and active networks.
  • Management, coordination, development, and implementation of research objectives, training, and counseling in physical and space geodesy relating to innovative positioning hardware, software, standards, specifications, procedures, policies, and applications.

Prior to serving as DOT Program Manager, Mr. Hartzheim has worked in various capacities with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation as Supervisor, Geodetic Development Engineer - Team Leader; and ; Geodetic Survey Engineer) in field of geodetic surveying. During his tenure, he has accomplished the following:

  • Principal in the development and implementation of the Wisconsin High Accuracy Reference Network (HARN).
  • Instructor from 1992 - 1998 at the University of Wisconsin - Madison, Department of Engineering Professional Development on "Introduction to Global Positioning System (GPS)".
  • Principal in the development and implementation of the Wisconsin Height Modernization Program (WI-HMP).
  • Principal in the development and implementation of the WISCORS network.
  • Author of publications on GPS and geodetic networks for nationally recognized survey magazine.

Mr. Hartzheim received a Bachelor of Science Degree, Civil and Environmental Engineering/Survey Option; University of Wisconsin – Madison, Madison, WI and an Associate Degree, Architectural Technology; Madison Area Technical College, Madison, WI. He is a registered Professional Engineer in Wisconsin.
